Over 600 Evacuees

Fires burning across Northern Ontario has triggered the mass evacuation of many small towns. The nearest town to where I live, Smiths Falls, has taken in over 600 so far, most from Deer Lake First Nation. That's nearly 10% of the normal population. I must admit I'm not that familiar with the life the people of Deer Lake normally live. I do know that it must be difficult to leave the life you have known and most, if not all, your possessions behind and travel almost as far as one can from home and still be in the same province. No one knows how long they may have to stay here, which will only make it more difficult for them.

I am proud that our little community has stepped up to welcome and provide shelter for so many. The Red Cross is accepting donations if you are able to give.
